Glass Bottles and Used Electrical Appliances (Islands District)

Pilot Community Recycling Programme in Islands District

Don’t hesitate! Recycle today!

In order to further promote waste recycling within the district, a pilot waste recycling programme was launched in March 2013 in the Islands District to collect glass bottles and used electrical appliances (or Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, WEEE). This one-year pilot programme is organized by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and assisted by the Islands District Office and the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD). The experience gained from this pilot scheme will be used for reference in planning for recycling of these materials in future.

About the Pilot Community Recycling Programme in the Islands District

Under the programme, collection points are set up in Cheung Chau, Peng Chau, Yung Shue Wan, Sok Kwu Wan and Mui Wo, mainly in refuse collection point, to collect glass bottles as well as used electrical appliances from the residents. This encourages residents of the Islands District to actively participate in source separation of waste and raise awareness in waste reduction among the community. FEHD collects and delivers the recyclables to EPD’s Transfer Facilities every day. Glass bottles will be sent to local factories for making ecopavers, and used electrical appliances to “WEEE go green” managed by the St. James’ Settlement for inspection. The refurbished appliances are for donation to the needy or for charitable sale. Those beyond repair are dismantled with their useable components and materials recovered for reuse and recycling.

The pilot programme ended on 30 September 2018. The collection service of the 38 collection points under the programme has been taken over by the Government appointed Glass Management Contractor to continue serving the residents on outlying islands with effect from 01 October 2018. We appreciate your continual support and participation in various waste reduction and recycling activities.
