Food Waste Recycling Schemes
Overview
The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has been providing free point-to-point food waste collection services for commercial and industrial premises through the Pilot Scheme on Food Waste Collection. Food Waste Recycling Points and Recycling Spots are set up at public refuse collection points and “food and beverage clusters” respectively, and smaller-scale restaurants can make arrangements to send their food waste to these designated locations for recycling. The food waste collected through the above initiatives is delivered to the Government’s treatment facilities for turning into electricity and compost.
Point-to-point Food Waste Collection Services
The EPD currently provides free point-to-point food waste collection services for public and private premises with larger quantity of food waste, such as food factories, wet markets, hotels and shopping malls, through the territory-wide Pilot Scheme on Food Waste Collection (Pilot Scheme).
If premises interesting in participating in food waste recycling are located in a venue (e.g. shopping mall) that has joined the Pilot Scheme, they can directly contact the property management company of the venue or the EPD to arrange for using the food waste recycling bins provided. The list of shopping malls participating in the Pilot Scheme can be downloaded here.

Food Waste Recycling Points at Public Refuse Collection Points
The EPD is progressively setting up Food Waste Recycling Points at public refuse collection points (RCP) under the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department to collect food waste generated by restaurants and households nearby. Currently, Food Waste Recycling Points have been set up at 107 public RCPs. Locations of Food Waste Recycling Points at public RCPs can be downloaded here.
Food Waste Recycling Spots
The EPD has set up Food Waste Recycling Spots in “food and beverage clusters”, aiming to collect food waste generated by restaurants by means of a booth set up at a designated location and time on a daily basis. 76 Food Waste Recycling Spots for use by restaurants and the public, and another 16 Food Waste Recycling Spots for use by restaurants only have currently been set up. Locations of Food Waste Recycling Spots can be downloaded here.
