Schools can make use of the “teaching resources”, “school-based activities” and “outreaching activities” etc., to enhance students’ knowledge on waste reduction and recycling, as well as community recycling support.

 

Objective

Educate students knowledge on waste reduction and recycling and allow them to familiarise with the recycling facilities at schools and in the community.

 

Expected Outcomes

Through a series of learning and practices, students will be able to:
  • Understand the importance of source separation of waste and recycling, as well as their impact on the environment
  • Master methods of waste reduction at source and proper recycling in daily live
  • Understand the locations of the recycling facilities at schools or in the community and learn how to use them
  • Cultivate waste reduction habit in schools

Teaching Resource Pack

The teaching resource pack provides support teachers in promoting the concepts of waste reduction and recycling in schools and GREEN@COMMUNITY recycling facilities through various lesson plans, worksheets, teaching activities, and extended activities. It also encourages students to invite their family members to practise source separation and recycling in their daily lives.

  • Lesson plan and worksheets (primary schools)
  • Extended activities (primary and secondary schools)

Teacher Workshop

The EPD appointed The Education University of Hong Kong to organise teacher workshops to introduce the usage of the teaching resource pack and provide an overview of waste reduction, waste management measures and community recycling support in Hong Kong. It allows teachers to understand and educate their students on the concepts of waste reduction and recycling, as well as community recycling facilities. In addition, teachers will be able to gain hands-on experience on one of the extended activities in the teaching resource pack (i.e. upcycle the residues of water treatment works into eco-magnetic chess or coaster). Content of the workshops is as follow:-

Dates:
Primary Schools: 18 & 25 October 2025 (Saturdays)
Secondary Schools: 1 & 8 November 2025 (Saturdays)
Time: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Venue: D3-G/F-05, The Education University of Hong Kong
Target participants: Primary and secondary school teachers
Quota: 50 pax./session
Language: Cantonese
Transportation: We will offer free shuttle bus commuting between MTR Tai Po Market Station and The Education University of Hong Kong
Enrolment method: Apply via this online form by 1 week before the scheduled workshop date. Applications will be processed on first-come-first-served basis. Successful applicants will be notified by The Education University of Hong Kong at least 3 calendar days before the assigned workshops. If you do not receive any notification by the time, you may assume that your application is unsuccessful. Participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Talk
Talk

Educate students with environmental knowledge like waste reduction and recycling, community recycling facilities, etc. in a comprehensible way. It is suitable to be carried out in assemblies and other special teaching activities.

Service period: September 2025 to July 2026, all weekdays (excluding public holidays), 9am to 5pm
Duration: Each seminar lasts for around 30-60 minutes

Education Panel
Education Panel

Schools can apply for educational panels for short-term display in the campus. Schools can flexibly decide display period and purposes according to their own needs, with a view to enhancing students’ understanding of source separation of waste.

Service period: September 2025 to February 2026 (Tentative)
Loan Period: Up to 7 days
Content: Waste management policies, waste hierarchy, principles of waste reduction and recycling, recyclable types and collection, community recycling network etc.
Note: Campus must have sufficient space to place the educational panels (4m(W) x 2m(H))

Application method:

  • Schools shall fill in and submit the application form to we_recycleschool@epd.gov.hk 1 month before the proposed exhibition date (e.g. if you wish to start displaying the panel on 1 November 2025, the application should be sent to the EPD by 1 October 2025). Subject to service demand, we will provide services according to your indicated priority of the proposed exhibition period as far as practicable.
  • The service operator will contact schools to discuss the arrangement after confirming the reservation.
  • Schools shall read the terms and conditions of the application form. By submitting the application, the school agrees to the terms and conditions.

Environmental Education Drama
Environmental Education Drama

Through collaboration with the non-profit organisation "The Theatre Wonderland", environmental education drama will be provided to member schools (limited to primary schools only) to educate students about waste reduction at source and encourage them and their family members to develop waste reduction habits in their daily lives. The musical drama is divided into two separate shows for students of different levels to join. The details are as follows:

Tour Dates: October 2025 to July 2026
Target audience: Primary 1 to 3
Language: Cantonese
Duration: Approximately 45-60 minutes (an additional 60 minutes are required for setup, and at least 45 minutes for dismantling after the performance)
No. of audiences: Minimum 240 per performance

《「源頭減廢」偵探社》("Waste Reduction at Source Detective Agency")
Tour Dates: October 2025 to July 2026
Target audience: Primary 4 to 6
Language: Cantonese
Duration: Approximately 45-60 minutes (an additional 60 minutes are required for setup, and at least 45 minutes for dismantling after the performance)
No. of audiences: Minimum 240 per performance

Application method:

  • Schools must complete this form (Chinese only) at least 6 weeks prior to the musical drama and email it to we_recycleschool@epd.gov.hk. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • After receiving the application, The Theatre Wonderland will contact the school directly within two weeks before the scheduled event to confirm the booking and discuss the arrangements.
  • Schools shall read the terms and conditions of the application form. By submitting the application, the school agrees to the terms and conditions.

(3) Outreaching Activities

Visits to the EPD’s Waste Recycling and Treatment Facilities

Students can learn about environmental knowledge like waste reduction at source and resources circulation etc. interactively through participating in the guided tours of the GREEN@COMMUNITY recycling facilities, waste-to-energy and waste-to-resources facilities.

Schools can contact the nearby Recycling Stations to arrange visits or participate in their source separation and recycling education activities. Quotas will be allotted on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Operators do not guarantee to arrange relevant activities to schools. Visit to Corporate’s Green Management Practices

In collaboration with Nan Fung Group, guided tours of the AIRSIDE office building will be provided to schools, allowing students to learn about corporate’s strategies for waste reduction and recycling, as well as sustainable development, including smart waste management, green building, and carbon emission management.

Service periods:
(1) Fridays in November 2025 (8 sessions)
(2) 23 and 30 January 2026 (Friday) (4 sessions)
(3) Fridays in March 2026 (8 sessions)
(4) 10, 17, 24 April 2026 (6 sessions)
(5) 8 and 15 May 2026 (4 sessions)
Duration: Approximately 90 minutes
(1) 10:00 am to 11:30 am; or
(2) 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm
Quota: 30 sessions (Primary Schools: 10 nos., Secondary Schools: 20 nos.)
No. of participants: Maximum of 20 students per session, led by a teacher

Application method:
Schools must apply to the EPD by telephone at 2838 3111 or email at we_recycleschool@epd.gov.hk at least one month prior to the intended visit date, specifying the proposed activity date, time, contact details and methods. Tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis. After successful booking, the Nan Fung Group will contact the school 14 calendar days before the visit to discuss the arrangements. Students are required to wear neat school uniforms.

Visit to Environmental Industry
Visits to recycling factories and other green industries to allow students to understand the operations of the environmental industry.

Date: October 2025 to May 2026, all weekdays (excluding public holidays), 9am to 5pm (Total 2 tours)
Duration: Approximately 1 hour per session
Target Audience: Secondary school students
No. of Participants: Maximum 30 persons
Content: Glass recycling facility visit and talk

Application method:

  • Schools must apply to the EPD by telephone at 2838 3111 or email at we_recycleschool@epd.gov.hk at least one month prior to the intended visit date, specifying the proposed activity date, time, contact details and methods. Tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • After successful booking, the facility operator will contact the school before the tour date to discuss the arrangements.
  • Schools should arrange their own transportation and provide the car plate no. to the facility operator for registration. Parking space is available outside the facility.

Organising other Environmental Education Activities

Schools can contact the contractors of “GreenLink – Environmental Education Support Programme” directly to arrange environmental education activities (such as school talks, field trips, workshops, etc.)

(4) School Recycling Support
Apply for Three-colour Waste Separation Bins

Schools can apply for the 3-colour waste separation bins through the “Waste Separation and Recycling Scheme in Schools” for separation of waste paper, metals and plastics.

Interested schools please fill in the application form, and email or fax to the Secretariat of the Environmental Campaign Committee (Email:schools@eeb.gov.hk / Fax:2909 9516)

General Terms of Activity Application
  • Service quotas are limited. Subject to service demand, the EPD does not guarantee the provision of required services. We recommend schools to contact us at least 2 months before the proposed activity period/loan date to allow timely arrangements
  • To allow more schools to participate in relevant activities, if schools have successfully applied for 3 or more of the above services within this school year, the priority of subsequent applications may be lowered
  • The EPD reserves the final right of approval for applicants
